Let’s talk about Sex education!

After the statement of our esteemed politician about banning sex education in schools, there was a huge upheaval everywhere. I was actually delighted to see that people were talking about it, criticizing it over social platforms and that too in masses. It’s a complete pleasure to see youth sharing their views about such an intense issue which is being mocked by the government in the name of culture and religion.

Let’s ponder over the source of sex education in current scenario. Obviously parents are not talking about it. They actually change the channel when some intimate scene is about to come or there is an advertisement of condom. Some of them can’t even watch the deodorant ads while sitting with their kids. So parents are out of question – most of the time. Next are teachers. Remember the reproduction chapter in biology book in school? Were all your questions entertained? Was your teacher comfortable talking about it? If they were, it’s brilliant. In some institutions, teachers are doing a great job but mostly in two tier or three tier cities, they fail to do so. Next option is elder brothers or sisters and friends in school who themselves have half baked knowledge about it.

Curiosity is a bitch and it can make you do things you wouldn't have imagined yourself.

It was one of the line from my biography and it fits perfectly well while we are dealing with the psychology of students in school. Such half baked knowledge can destroy everything. Not having knowledge is dangerous, but having wrong knowledge is even disastrous. Especially in India where chauvinism and patriarchy dominates the entire society, any kind of wrong perceptions can make any kid a potential rapist. It might sound too farfetched but sadly, it’s true.

They often link the entire sex scene with the influence of western countries but they fail to accept that modernization and westernization are two entirely different concepts and must not be confused. But we don’t really have such intellectual people in the cabinet, do we? Even if we do, might be they are too afraid to be bold and are following the same rudimentary thinking and approach. Development of infrastructure, jobs and everything else is indeed significant but what about the social development? What about the development of mentality of major population of country which is still not ready to accept that sex is natural and talking about the same should not be a taboo. And who will bring the change or reform?

If they want to argue that we must follow our culture, let’s do it completely then. Let’s bring Sati Pratha back and burn the widows with their deceased husbands. Let’s get back to the time cast system and untouchablity was at its utmost glory. Let’s bring polygamy back for god’s sake! I remember almost all our prime mythological characters having more than one wife or husband. Are you ready to do that all? If not, please admit that culture and society is prone to change according to the time and development. And while you establish that in your mind concretely, be ready and prepare yourself more changes which are readily required in society.
